Tea or coffee?

Today afternoon its unusually quiet. I am sitting in the balcony, sipping hot and sweet ginger tea. It’s a holiday for school but strangely I cannot see even a single kid running around in play area. I am enjoying this quiet. Vary rarely I get to enjoy it.  Small joys of life.

Usually, on a weekday morning, the only thing I drink at home is a sip of water. My day starts early. Usually I am already out of home and on my way to office at 7 am. 10.30 am is the time reserved in office to have first cup of beverage. I don’t have a preference in office – It can be anything of the available choices – tea, coffee, badam milk or green tea. It is part of my routine now. I do it out of habit. I tend to skip it if I do not have company. Actually this hot cup serves as a tiny break in the early busy hours of the day.

But on weekend the story is different. There are only two morning in the week where me and husband can spend some morning time together. Every Saturday and Sunday morning a question is hung in air – Tea or coffee?

I love ginger teas throughout the year, irrespective of the weather. The aroma of tea, spicy taste of ginger and the sweetness of concoction just brighten up my mornings. But it does not mean I do not enjoy coffee. But I enjoy coffee the typical Marathi way – 3.4th milk, 1/4th water, mild coffee with cardamom and nutmeg. Husband is on the other side of the bridge. He supremely enjoys experimenting with different brews, loves the bitterness in his cup of coffee and milk just for touch. I think he is a psudo Indian in some way – ( I know this is very unfair statement but how can he not enjoy tea? Surely this is a strong question mark on his Indian-ness).  We have around 5-6 different kind of coffee powders at home. Thankfully till now he is satisfied with the functioning of the basic coffee maker we have at home. But I strongly suspect arrival of a French press anytime soon in coming months. Cutting it short, coffee it is on most weekend mornings.

But now, husband is off to USA. I am back to my lovely and  hot steaming gingery sweet cup of ambrosia. Not that I don’t like coffee, but it has its own time and situation – after sumptuous south Indian breakfast, on a rainy afternoon, during late night “gappa” ( chit chat – discussions) at home.  Today is bonus day for my tea life. It’s a weekday but a holiday – so here I am with my cup of tea, enjoying the rarely quiet afternoon.

The question – “Tea or coffee?” can rest till husband is back.

You've got a mail

Today I was really bored after coming back home. Had a long and hectic day in office. The thought of long day full of  meeting makes me depressed, bored and irritated. I had to do something. I wanted to watch a movie. But not sure of which one. I sat in front of my laptop aimlessly staring at the screen. I remebered one movie I watched on one late winter night at MDI with hot steaming soup  and I downloaded that movie - You've got mail.

The movie is quite charming - typical romantic story where a girl falls in love with a stranger who turns out to be the bad guy in her life. But as the time progresses they realize, its their destiny to be together.

But that is not the reason why I liked this movie. There were many things which touched different part of me.

Writing emails and letters - the first and foremost factor which draws me to this movie. An email or a letter makes the relation come alive. Its a thing you can read and re read again - whenever you remember that person, whenever you are feeling low, whenever you need support - love- comfort.
To quote Kathleen Kelly ( the female protagonist) - "The odd thing about this form of communication ( email / letter) is that you're more likely to talk about nothing than something. But I just want to say that all this nothing has meant more to me than so many somethings."
It echoes my feelings. Call me old fashioned, but  I get super excited to find a personal email in my inbox. My hands troumble with excitement while receiving a letter via courier. It makes me feel special, cared and loved.

Kathleen, a small book store owner, is not able to cope up with loss of customers due to opening of a discount book superstore in her neighborhood. She had to close her store with a heavy heart and a sense of losing a big chunk of her life.
She write to the stranger in an email - "Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life - well, valuable, but small - and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around? I don't really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So good night, dear void."
I paused the movie, re-winded it to listen to the thought once again.  Isn't it the question all of us ask to ourselves at some or the other point of time but not able to come up with a convincing answer?

If you have not watched this movie, do watch it.
The charming old style courtships and nostalgia mixed with some really impeccable moments where you will be compelled to think about your own life-  is what makes this movie special.
This may not be my favourite movie, but this is the movie i will come back to when I need comfort.
And now time to get back to work - start working on a typical  powerpoint presentation with charts figures and numbers. Back to the real life from reel life.

Peaceful existence.

I was going through the photos on my cellphone so that I could delete unwanted stuff and create space.
I stumbled upon one  photograph, it was clicked around a year back, in Auroville during a short two day visit to Puducherry. The whole concept of Auroville is fascinating. - a universal town with foundation values peace and harmony.

After doing all the typical tourist sightseeing, we sat down to have a cup of coffee.
After a while,  a very old and frail lady walked in the coffee shop. She had a walking stick in one hand and a small jute sling bag over other shoulder. She looked around, chose a seat at one corner, looking out of coffee shop. She walked to the counter, put her order and sat down at chosen place. She was looking out into the horizon as if some very fascinating thing is unfurling in front of her. Soon , she was served with a small cup of tea. She took tea in her hand, inhaled deeply, smiled and took her first sip. With overflowing satisfaction on her face, she put down the cup and again looked far away. Her face was peaceful. There is no other word to describe the content feeling on her face.

She might be staying alone there, far away from her home, with strangers with different nationalities. But she had made peace with the world around her. As if, she did not have any regrets, any sorrows, any unfulfilled wishes in her life.

At this moment more than anything from that trip, I vividly remember lingering smile on her  face and her calm peaceful eyes.

There are many things a person hopes to achieve in his or her life. Whatever I achieve in my life, I wish for the same content feeling at later stage. Inspiring things may not be very grand or totally outstanding, such small-easy to miss things leave a greater impact. You just have to be receptive to small joys of life.

My blackberry is not working!

I am feeling restless, handicap, unconnected and isolated from world – when I have one perfectly working cell phone, a desktop phone in office, 24*7 internet at service.

Now its official. I am addicted to my blackberry.
And I feel my life crumpled around me. I sadly look at my Nokia phone and sigh. Huh.
This is insanely stupid I know but cannot help feeling depressed.

No BBM, no WhatsApp, no Gtalk. Now I will have to periodically check my emails on laptop and no internet on go.And I think, how did I manage without my beloved BB before last June?

But this is a wake-up call for me. I am shocked to find how dependant I am on my blackberry – as if my whole life revolves around it.  Time to think. Time for firm resolution. I will not get so much attached to my phone or any gadget in future ( after I get my blackberry repaired I will add this to TO DO list ).

But I am not alone in this category. The more I look around I find similar species around me. I have never seen anybody sit still in bus or train in last some months I recollect. Either headphones plugged in or smsing. If not these then playing games or talking on phone. This tiny gadget has started to rule over the younger generation. What is happening to us?

Let go....

How difficult is it to let go? Things, people, memories, expectations  and what not. Its not easy to let go.
My mavshi always used to say that I have too many things in my cupboard. I have this ridiculous habit. Memories are not enough for me. I keep things to remind me of those memories. I have a ribbon to remind me of my grandma's bday, a pen to remember my last day of school, an envelop of the greeting card given to my best friend. These things are silly, unimportant in one glance, but they are very valuable for me. When I was coming to MDI, I knew I had to clear up my closet. My heart still pains for all the things I threw away. It was not easy.
Similarly its the case with clothes. How many of us find it difficult to discard a favourite shirt, a favourite pair of shoes, or an old but loved scarf? Even though its very clear that it will not be used in future, its difficult to let it go.
Our life has some relations which turn sour due to some reasons. But still, as holding on is innate human nature, its difficult to let relations go, let people go. But if not learnt this important skill, such kept relations can actually result in more pains.

Space is a constraint everywhere. If something new has to come, something old has to go. Then why not throw away all such sorry stuff and create space for something happy, something nice?
Its easy to say. Difficult to do.
But what I learnt is - Let it go, because something better is on the way.

My dream home

Most of the fairy tales have a prince or princess living at a beautiful magnificent palace with  unending gardens, numerous fountains, thousands of rooms, rich draperies and sparkling chandeliers..... Ever since then I had dreamt of myself living in such a palace. It was my dream house. :)
As I grew up, I stopped reading those fairy tales but the image of me living in palace still lingered. But as time passed by, the palace was replaced by some other image.
A small cottage hidden among trees, with a winding approach road. The home had low fencing and tall trees around it. Sweet smelling flower-beds would greet everyone coming to my home.
Everyday in my sleep I used to visit this place - my home.
But one day some other home became my dream home. I saw it in Kashmir, near Pahalgam.
A tiny house, on the bank of a river. It was green everywhere around. The walls were yellow and roof was red. It had white fences and a red gate. It was love at first sight.

My latest dream home is FallingWater . I really really wish I have a home like this. A real waterfall in my home would be amazing!

I may not be able to own a home like this, but big deal - My heart can own any home of my dream.

Delhi ki sardi!

Last year I was dreading winters. Initially I used to hate winters. I am a 'sunny' kind of person - ample sunshine,  warm weather and bright days. But one year in Delhi and I fell in love with winter.
Winter @ Delhi is so much different than winter @ Nagpur.
Fall in temperature, fog and smog, numbness in limbs, wearing layers and layers of clothing, heater in room and anytime-chai time...
MDI is the loveliest place at a cold winter night. Stroll in tree lined roads of MDI, totally packed in my winter wear, with a hot fuming chai in hand, moonlight filtering through fog and unending chit-chat. Its Awesome!
Yesterday morning I woke up at 9 and I saw this from my balcony -

It was beautiful....
:)
finally the fog melted at 10.30am and later that day I came to know temperature of previous day - it had dropped to 1.8 degrees.

A Warm and Cold story

This is a story I heard recently. Name of story is - A Warm Fuzzy Tale.

Once upon a time, there lived two people called Tim and Maggie with their two children John and Lucy. To understand how happy they were you have to understand how things were in those days.

You see in those happy days everyone was given a small, soft Fuzzy Bag when born. Any time a person reached into this bag they were able to pull out a Warm Fuzzy.whenever someone was given a Warm Fuzzy it made them feel warm and fuzzy all over. Those days it was very easy to get a Warm Fuzzy. Everyone asked for Warm Fuzzy and everyone gave Warm Fuzzy. So everyone was happy and felt warm and fuzzy most of the time.
One day a bad witch who made salves and potions for sick people became angry because everyone was so happy and feeling good and no one was buying potions and salves. The witch was very clever and devised a very wicked plan. One beautiful morning while Maggie was playing with her daughter the witch crept up to Tim  and whispered in his ear,   - "See here, Tim, look at all the Fuzzies that Maggie is giving to Lucy. You know, if she keeps it up she is going to run out and then there won't be any left for you!"
Tim got worried and was convinced that sooner or later, Maggie will run out of Warm Fuzzies and was angry whenever Maggie gave anyone Warm Fuzzy. Because Maggie loved Tim a lot, she stopped giving Warm Fuzzy. Soon the word spread that Warm Fuzzies are not unlimited and people stopped giving Warm Fuzzies.  People began feel less warm, the fell sick and some of then died. Wicked Witch did not want people to die, but to remain sick so that they will buy her potions.
So she gave everybody a bag similar to Bag of Warm Fuzzies but this new bag produced Cold Pricklies. Cold Pricklies made people cold and prickly but saved them from dying. The situation got very complicated since the coming of the witch because there were fewer and fewer Warm Fuzzies around and Warm Fuzzies which used to be free as air, became extremely valuable. some people would take Cold Pricklies--which were everywhere and freely available-and coated them white and fluffy so that they almost looked like Warm Fuzzies. These fake Warm Fuzzies were really Plastic Fuzzies, and they caused additional problems.
Once a woman came from nearby town who was oblivious to the belief of limited Warm Fuzzies and started handing out Warm Fuzzy freely. Children loved her and they followed. But people got angry and they passed a law. The law made it a criminal offense to give out Warm Fuzzies in a reckless manner or without a license.
Many children, however, seemed not to care; and in spite of the law they continued to give each other Warm Fuzzies whenever they felt like it and always when asked. Because they were many, many children, almost as many as grown ups, it began to look as if maybe they would have their way.

As of now its hard to say what will happen.
Will the grownups  laws stop the recklessness of the children?
Are the grownups going to join with the Hip Woman and the children in taking a chance that there will always be as many Warm Fuzzies as needed?
Will they remember the days their children are trying to bring back when Warm Fuzzies were abundant because people gave them away freely ?
The struggle spread all over the land and is probably going on right were you live. If you want to, and I hope you do, you can join by freely giving and asking for Warm Fuzzies and being as loving and healthy as you can.

I have made my choice, have you?

Helter-skelter

That must be the most funniest incident experienced by me in a classroom.
A dull Saturday morning class, started at 8.30am, supposed to end at 12 o'clock - sleepy classroom, prof is repeatedly failing to make people respond to questions. The minute hand of wall clock is just not moving!
Still one whole hour for class to end.
Tadaaaaa....
Two pigeons zoom into classroom from nowhere. They are confused, and keep flying here and there. Suddenly professor squeaks and class is slowly getting out of sleep-zone to trace origin of the strange sound.
Professor asks CR to perform his duty - Call someone from administration to shoo away the birds.
Promptly two representatives of administration come to class. Eureka! They have one awesome solution to drive away birds - Switch on the fans!
And then "those crazy 5 mins" began.
Birds everywhere....and admin men after them. some of the now awake sleepyheads joined the bird-shooing gang, and professor at the door of class..
Finally, after some crazy minutes, birds and admin men were out, prof was in and students were back to sleeping den.
But with all this excitement professor decided to call it a day.
A pathetically boring morning turned into most exciting class ever.

so enjoy baby...these days will not come again..

Ghar.

Laws of economics

First of all, I am not a fan of economics. Its really not my cup of tea. But Abhishek showed me that irrespective of we notice or not, we experience these laws in our day to day life. Interesting. And I realized, laws of economics are eternal and omnipresent.

Consider a situation.
Hot summer afternoon, scorching sun overhead, you are walking since last two hours without any shade on the way. You see a lush green tree and decide to settle down for a moment and take out your water bottle. The first gulp of water gives satisfaction of 100 "percentile". I have used word percentile and not percentage for a specific reason. The next gulp of water does satiate your thirst but sweetness of first drop was more than the on you are drinking now.  -  A classic economics law explained.- Law of diminishing returns.

Similar is the case of learning curve.
We keep on talking about " Practice makes a man perfect" and "Experience is the best teacher". These phrases generally used by our grandpas and grandmas are nothing but pure strategy. If this is not learning curve, then what is it?

Isn't it true? Its kind of fun to see how any subject you studied ( mainly theoretical subjects) in your yesteryear translates into real life.

Train and window

Today me and my friends we went to Saket. The motivation behind the visit was to eat one doughnut from Mad Over Doughnut. As usual, it was crowded. No space to sit. But fortunately I rushed to position myself in front of opposite metro door. I just love to stand there and look out of the big square window of the door with my mp3 player plugged in.
Different scenes and places run past. First the mall street ( thats my term. so may malls between MG Road and Arjan Garh) and there comes numerous marble/ granite stores....and a huge green patch will jump in front of you and you will really wonder " Is it really Delhi - Gurgaon route?" But the fun ends as metro is underground after Saket.

Today I remembered one memorable train journey. It was long back, around 2001 from Mumbai to Ratnagiri. I was fascinated by numerous tunnels on that route. The greenery, the mighty Sahyadris on one side and the blue sea on other side along with "Narali - Pophali".   :)

Other amazing train journey was from Amgaon to Nagpur in Sept 2011. I was travelling by a local. I boarded train at 6 am. It had rained whole night and just stopped at the wee hours. I fortunately found an empty window seat. Still I could smell of the rains. As the train started gaining speed, rush of wind blew on my face playfully messing up my hair. It was all lush green outside. Paddy crops were just done planting. A moist smell of forests and fields hung in the air. The hot Adrak chai tasted so amazing in that atmosphere. That train journey helped me to get back to roots as well. After a long time I was travelling without reservation, in a train compartment where people sat on floor, in the door and on the luggage compartment, with large sacks and cane baskets filled with a variety assorted different things. It was not very comfortable but I won't mind to repeat it either.

This blog post is quite disconnected, the way ideas came I penned them down.
I love train journeys. The patience of counting passing by poles, constantly changing wallpaper outside window, chai-garam and local specialties at various stations, antakshari in groups, relentless talking with neighbours, the fear of not getting up for a early morning destination..... Its all fun.

I would second Sheldon of Big Bang theory in his opinion -  Only  a fool won't like trains...They are always fun!

Wallpaper and कुसुमाग्रज

It is quite strange. I was in my friend's room, we had to work on a case. He powered on his laptop and his wallpaper reminded me of कुसुमाग्रज
No, he is not marathi, and I am sure he doesn't even know that a person called कुसुमाग्रज ever walked this earth.
He had a lone tree as his wallpaper. Dry grassland and just a single tree. nothing living in sight - no animals, no birds, not even a single other tree.

It reminded me of a poem by कुसुमाग्रज - पाचोळा.

A  few leaves had fallen and lay like neglected toys on the grass. Scorching sun burns them, the black scary night covers everything, rain drench the grassland, tree and the fallen leaves. The leaves on three turn and twist in wind as if laughing at the fallen leafy soldiers.
And all of sudden, out of nowhere, a gush of wind blows all the leaves.....the land is cleared....for more leaves to fall down.

Actually this is the circle of life. Birth, youth, adulthood, old-age and death. And someone is already there in line to take place of the fallen.

Assumptions and perceptions…. And Tuticorin

I know – no connection at first but let me explain.
In life we always tend to assume about many things. What we like, what will happen,  how things will go, how life will be. What not. It is really difficult to escape these assumption trap and think clearly- not always- but many times. We form a translucent layer in front of our sensory organs to filter out the information and feeling what exactly we want to feel that actually what we feel.  Most of the times, we perceive things not based upon what they actually are but based on what we assume them to be.
These assumptions have ruined things – relationships, trips, new place experience, movies  :P   and what not…  Enough of fandas..
What I realized yesterday that Tuticorin is not that bad place to be – actually I am loving this whole new experience…
My view till yesterday: When I first came to know that I have to do my internship at a place called Tuticorin I was sad, dejected. I felt like I am leaving the living vibrant world and stepping on some dull boring alien planet. After coming here, I cursed this place like anything. But at least the work was interesting that made me feel a bit better. Such a small town – not options of eating out, no hanging out places, no Hindi/English, no  Hindi / English movies, even Discovery channel in Tamil, eating big pile of rice and maida roties every day…. Not my idea of a perfect fun internship!
So I dragged myself to complete each day. I even made a table in sheet of paper and stroke off each day at night! ( Ramya hope you read that ).
Now 20 days old in internship and happy to get stipend, I came back from office early yesterday. After getting down from the bus, instead of going to apartment, I decided to have a stroll in neighborhood. I walked on the street, in and around residential area, inside medical college premise, went to a mandir nearby, found out a market about one km away from our apartment and found a courier place… and I had a big smile on my face. I was enjoying walking there.  These days I am unknowingly humming Tamil songs! ( hey, I know I don’t understand Tamil, but music has no language ! :P  one more fanda…. I know I know… )
All in all, it’s not that bad as it seemed…

If you really want to touch someone, send them a letter.

the lone ship..

I am feeling like a boat on high sea... complete within itself but set for a search of life.
On way, it finds another ship, there are glances shared but the feeling remains!
On the journey to abode that ship is feeling touch. It has to face severity of sun, extremity of winds and occasional rains.
Sun is external agency that heats your mind and tests you. Winds are continuous changes that sweep your life and then there are rains called tears that roll down your cheek- sometimes in cheer sometimes in displeasure.
You feel dying thirst- sometimes its the thirst of success to prove your metal to world....
The ship has to move on...

I am compelled to quote from ancient mariner that "water water everywhere but no water to drink".
People around you get success and you are left in lurch. You feel like jumping into the sea...to do what others are doing and follow the conventional path...but then your inner voice beckons  and tells " you have to reach new places"...
And the search continues.....
